How to Read the Label on a Vending Machine Product

2 min read

Ingredients, allergens, nutrition facts, and best-before dates – what to check on the label of a snack or drink from a vending machine.

A product from a vending machine is the same product you would buy in a store – with the same label. The difference is that you see it through glass before buying, so it helps to know what to look for once it is in your hand.

Ingredients

Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight. If sugar appears near the top, it makes up a large share of the product.

Allergens

Substances that cause allergies or intolerances are highlighted on the label, for example in bold. In the EU, labeling rules are set by Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011. People with allergies should also look for "may contain" statements. "May contain" statements are voluntary – their absence does not mean there is no risk.

Nutrition Facts

The table lists values per 100 g or 100 ml, sometimes also per serving. When comparing two snacks, compare values per 100 g rather than per package, since package sizes differ.

Best-Before and Use-By Dates

"Best before" marks the date of minimum durability; when only the month and year are given, the wording is "best before end." "Use by" applies to foods that are highly perishable from a microbiological point of view, such as sandwiches and salads from a refrigerated unit.

Chilled Products

Drinks and meals in snack vending machines and smart fridges must be stored at the temperature specified by the manufacturer. Storage instructions are printed on the package.

FAQ

Do vending products have different labels than store products? No. They are the same products, labeled by the manufacturer.

Where can I report a problem with a product? The operator's contact details are usually on a sticker on the machine.
